Ricinus communis, the castor bean or castor oil plant, is a species of perennial flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae.

अरंडी तेल का पेड़ एक पुष्पीय पौधे की बारहमासी झाड़ी होती है, जो एक छोटे आकार से लगभग १२ मी के आकार तक तेजी से पहुँच सकती है, पर यह कमजोर होती है। इसकी चमकदार पत्तियॉ १५-४५ सेमी तक लंबी, हथेली के आकार की, ५-१२ सेमी गहरी पालि और दांतेदार हाशिए की तरह होती हैं। उनके रंग कभी कभी, गहरे हरे रंग से लेकर लाल रंग या गहरे बैंगनी या पीतल लाल रंग तक के हो सकते है। तना और जड़ के खोल भिन्न भिन्न रंग लिये होते है। इसके उद्गम व विकास की कथा अभी तक अध्ययन अधीन है।
