The tomato is the edible, often red, fruit of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant. The plant belongs to the nightshade family, which is called Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America.



टमाटर आमतौर पर ग्रीष्म ऋतु में होनेवाली फसल है। इसके लिए गर्म और नर्म मौसम की जरूरत है। टमाटर का पौधा ज्यादा ठंड और उच्च नमी को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर पाता है टमाटर की अच्छी उपज में तापमान का बहुत बड़ा योगदान होता है । फसल के लिए आदर्श तापमान २० - २५0 सेन्टीग्रेट होता है । तापमान अधिक होने पर फूल एवं अपरिपक्व फल टूटकर गिरने लगते है । जब तापक्रम १३0 से कम एवं ३५0 से ज्यादा होता है, तब परागकण का अंकुरण बहुत कम हो जाता है बाजार में माग कम होने पर टमाटर को कुछ दिनों तक भण्डारित किया जा सकता है.
